What's the Difference Between FWD, RWD, AWD and 4WD?

Type of Drivetrains

When shopping for a vehicle, one of the first decisions you’re confronted with is what type of drivetrain to get. From front-wheel drive to all-wheel drive, there’s a drivetrain to fit just about any driving style.

Front-wheel drive(FWD) is commonly found in compact cars and economy models, and it is often chosen for smaller vehicles due to its space-efficient design, allowing for more interior cabin space.

Rear-wheel drive(RWD) is attributed to high performance; hence, it is found in sport, luxury and high-performance vehicles. Rear-wheel drive is appreciated due to its ability to offer a more engaging and dynamic driving experience.

AWD is more suited for on-road use as its system operates automatically.

4WD(4*4) vehicles are typically designed for off-road and can be manually switched between 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive modes. 4x4 is more suited for off-road journeys.

Two-wheel drive(2WD):
1. Front engine front drive (FF), the most common front engine front drive, this drive layout is to put the engine in the front engine compartment and use the front wheel drive. This is the most popular drive type for most cars, but trucks and buses basically do not use this type.
Representative models: Volkswagen Magotan, Toyota Camry, Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz B-Class, etc.

2. Front engine rear-drive (FR), that is, the engine is front-mounted and the rear wheels are driven. This is the most traditional drive type. Most domestic and foreign trucks, some cars (especially high-end cars such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW) and some buses still use front engine rear-drive, while most medium and small cars no longer use this front engine rear-drive drive.
Representative models: Toyota Reiz, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Ferrari 599, etc.

3. Rear-engine rear-drive (RR), the engine is arranged at the rear of the car, connected with the differential and manual transmission, the rear wheels are driving wheels, and the engine is arranged behind the rear axle. This is a rear-engine rear-drive. It is a popular layout for large and medium-sized buses. The only modern passenger cars with rear engines are the Porsche 911 series and Smart fortwo.

4. Middle-engine Rear-drive (MR), middle-engine rear-drive means the engine is in the middle and the rear wheels are driven. The engine is arranged at the rear of the car, connected with the differential and manual transmission. The rear wheels are driving wheels, and the engine is arranged behind the front axle. This is a middle-engine rear-drive. Most high-performance sports cars and supercars use this type.
Representative models:
Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2, Pagani Zonda, Porsche Carrera GT, etc.

Four-wheel drive
1.Four-wheel drive.Today’s 4WD systems are either full-time or part-time. In a full-time system, the vehicle automatically switches between two-wheel and four-wheel drive while a part-time system requires the driver to manually engage the four-wheel drive system. 4WD shines in heavy snow and off-road situations.

2.All-wheel drive.AWD delivers power to all four wheels. Most all-wheel drive systems are always on, using sensors to determine which wheel needs power. However, be aware that systems vary and some all-wheel drive setups stay in two-wheel drive most of the time and only go into all-wheel drive mode when the sensors detect the vehicle is losing traction.
